The Criminal Court Services Operation provides direct support to the criminal
departments in the Central District of the Los Angeles Superior Court,
administrative support for various criminal justice committees and
organizations, and countywide functions such as bail, exhibits, criminal
appeals and special functions. This operation also analyzes pending or new
legislation and monitors caseflow management.
Bail is posted in criminal cases in the form of bail bonds, cash, equity in real
property, bonds of the United States or personal surety. Bail may be forfeited
if the defendant fails to appear when scheduled. The Bail Section is
responsible for the security of bail bonds, the issuance of Notices of
Forfeiture, trustee services for deeds of trust and promissory notes submitted
to secure equity in real property in lieu of cash bail, and the preparation of
documents to submit to the Court for Summary Judgments.
The Exhibits Section is responsible for the security, storage, and ultimate
disposal of exhibits in Criminal and Juvenile cases. Criminal and Juvenile
exhibits are disposed of by returning them to the rightful owner, selling any
unclaimed valuables, transferring unclaimed cash to the County General Fund or
destroying contraband and non-valuable exhibits.
The Appeals Section prepares and transmits the record on appeal in criminal
cases to the Court of Appeal or the Supreme Court. The unit is also responsible
for monitoring appeals while they are pending in the higher court and taking
appropriate action when an appeal is finally determined.
The Criminal Courts Coordinator's Office provides administrative support for the
Supervising Judge of the Criminal Division in the area of calendar management.
This office is also responsible for the management of all confidential expense
claims for investigators in capital cases.
