DESCRIPTION
Juvenile Externs, Law Students, work under the
direction of Research Attorneys to assist the Presiding Judge of the Juvenile
Court, the Supervising Judge of the Dependency Courts and other Juvenile Court
Judicial Officers in the areas of Dependency (child abuse and neglect),
Delinquency (Juvenile crime) and Informal Juvenile & Traffic Court matters.
Some of the extern tasks include:
Prepare legislative summaries
Analysis of pending and newly adopted Juvenile laws
Research policy issues that affect Juvenile law or procedure
Research legal issues for any of the Juvenile Court Judicial Officers
regarding specific cases
Attend judicial, administrative and policy meetings
Observe proceedings in Dependency including Mediations, Delinquency, Juvenile
Mental Health and Informal Juvenile & Traffic Courts
Tour selected Juvenile detention facilities and Juvenile camps
Attend training sessions for Juvenile Court Judicial Officers and attorneys
Write articles for the Juvenile Court Partners newsletter
The Fall and Spring Extern Program schedule depends on
a school's academic calendar.
The Summer Extern Program schedule is from the end of May through the first
week of August.
