Chalfant Assigned to Writs and Receivers
Effective Friday, Feb. 1, Judge
James C. Chalfant will preside in the Writs and
Receivers Department 85, room 836, Stanley Mosk
Courthouse,
Angeles. He was assigned to the post by Supervising
Judge C. Stephen Czuleger.
Currently presiding over
civil matters in Department 13 of the same
Courthouse, Chalfant succeeds Judge Dzintra Janavs, who retires on March 20, 2008,
after 21 years on the bench and eight
years in Department 85.
Writs and receivers matters
are critical, timely hearings similar to appeals court decisions. The most common writ is a writ of mandamus, which directs a public
agency (such as a city or the county) to take action in conformance with the
law.
Receiverships ordinarily
require a judge to appoint an authority to operate a business or partnership.
Judge David Yaffe will become managing judge of the writs and receivers
departments on Feb. 1.
