Who We Are
The Office of the Family Law Facilitator assists parties with child support, spousal support and health insurance issues. The staff consists of attorneys and paralegals, which will meet with parties individually to attempt to resolve their support issues. The staff does not give legal advice nor does it represent a particular party in an action. There is no confidentiality nor attorney-client relationship created or intended between the office and a party.
Each day, the office serves parties referred by the courts, parties through appointments at most court locations, and, if time permits, walk-in parties. The office does not provide assistance over the telephone other than to make appointments or to answer general questions. Calls to any Facilitator Office should be made between 8:00-9:00 a.m.
The Office of the Family Law Facilitator does not charge for its services nor does it accept contributions.
What We Do
The Office of the Family Law Facilitator provides the following assistance:
- Explains the process of establishing paternity;
- Prepares Orders to Show Cause and Responses to establish, modify or terminate a child support, spousal support or health insurance order; determine arrears; release licenses, establish repayment plans, seek reimbursement for overpayments; and, quash or modify wage assignment orders, among other things.
- Provides information and prepares draft calculations of support amounts based on statutory guidelines;
- Provides referrals to the Los Angeles County Child Support Services Department, Family Court Services and other community agencies;
- Prepares stipulations for parties who agree to child support, spousal support or health insurance;
- Prepares answers to Los Angeles County Child Support Services Department complaints;
- Screens parties to receive a Court Appointed Attorney in cases involving the Los Angeles County Child Support Services Department;
- Prepares motions to set aside in cases involving the Los Angeles County Child Support Services Department;
- Prepares Orders After Hearing and Wage Assignment Orders in which child support, spousal support or health insurance are at issue in family law cases;
- Mediates child support, spousal support and health insurance issues between the parties
What You Need To Know And What You Need To Bring
In order for the Office of the Family Law Facilitator to help you complete most court papers, you will need to provide the information and documents listed below:
- A complete copy of your Superior Court case file;
- Pay stubs for the last three pay periods and information about any other income earned by the other party and you;
- A federal tax return for the last two years, including tax filing status for both parties;
- The location of the other party's job and the amount he or she earns monthly, if known;
- The location of the other party's residence and the number of children not of this relationship living with and supported by the other party;
- Monthly living expenses, including housing, utilities, insurance, food, transportation, education and clothing;
- Names and ages of children of the relationship, and how much time each party spends with them each month;
- Any extraordinary expenses related to health care and catastrophic losses and
- Someone to translate, if English is not the party's primary language
